—SORRY THAT I MISSED YOUR PARTY

missed

last night
the moon
drunk-dialed
me
but
i was
drunk
myself
and
missed her
call
in the morning
as she stood
behind the
flanks
of a
dumb-struck
sun
i watched
her dance
and
bunny hop
with her friends
all of them
golden and
fomenting
the very
cloud skirts
i’m
clinging to
now
today
at hand
my hand
on a gun
my finger
on a trigger
though
honestly
it’s really
lovely
to be
thought of
at all

—I THINK WE NEED MORE ICE

…If you’re looking for something to distract yourself this weekend, the new issue of BENDING GENRES is out and it’s chockfull of incredible writing. You’ll also find our Inclusion Policy at the top of the issue.  And if you’re a writer of poetry, CNF or short fiction, please send something good our way:

…For mental health reasons, I’ve been trying to stay away from social media and the news, the latter of which is a real challenge for me. But I’ve discovered short films, which is a help.  Omeleto has thousands of them in just about every category.

Here are a few of my favorites:

…Both of my kids have been out protesting, which makes me proud, though I do worry about how easily something peaceful and tense can turn violent. Here’s one news story that reflected hopefulness:

…I hope you have a wonderful weekend.  On my end, most day it’s been hard to be creative, but I’m going to surround myself with happy music and images. I hope wherever you are, you are happy and safe as well.
See you Monday…

—FURNITURE’S OUT ON THE FRONT PORCH, MUSIC’S UP LOUD

The Joy of Being Missed

If only because the babies need you.
Though the rosebushes need you, too.
Open-air bodegas need you. Blueberry sorbet needs you.
Butterflies and bees.
What-looks-like-Borscht-but-isn’t needs you.
Breathing unimpeded needs you.
The Book of Love needs you.
Better Than Ezra.  Bob Dylan and bar music.
The Before-it-really-ends needs you. The But-But-But needs you.
Even the bruises need you. (Especially the bruises.)
The strawberry moon needs you. The last bottle needs you.
Hot air balloons.
Broken bones.  Broken promises. Every broken thing needs you.
Belgium needs you, too, though only in the right clime. Same with Belize and Bavaria.
Sometimes blue alone needs you.
Sometimes simply burgundy.
Or Bordeaux.
For sure boredom. Belief in fairy tales. Belief in Yahweh.
The Bee Gees and Barry Manilow need you.
Bipolar needs you.
Bitemarks need you.
Bohemia. Bulimia.
Church bells and Hey-Beautiful-where-are-my-car-keys? need you.
Koalas and bears of every species need you.
Boxed crayons need you. Christmas boxes, too.
But the babies, oh the babies, they’re who need you most.
They need you now, in fact.
Can’t you hear them squalling?

—I’M JUST SAYING EVERYTHING OUT LOUD SO I KNOW IT’S TRUE

…Yesterday was a better day for me. In the last couple of months, it’s always one up, one (way) down.
Yesterday I saw a doe grazing in a yard.
I saw field after field of white daisies scattered like a baby’s breath, butterflies and bees doing their magic.
I saw a pair of ten-year-old’s sitting at a table on the sidewalk in downtown Snohomish. At first, I thought they were maybe selling lemonade. Nope. There was a vase with flowers on the table and a sign that said FREE SNACKS AND CONVERSATION. One of the boys was snapping a photo of a police officer posing, giving the ‘thumbs up’ sign.  Definitely cuter.
I saw a life-sized statue of Sasquatch in front of someone’s yard wearing a face mask.

...And a few days ago, I learned one of my stories was long-listed as one of the 100 best short fictions at Wigleaf, a premier online magazine that I have admired since I started writing full-time. Here’s the story:

…I’ve pretty much been staying off social media of late. Most of the posts just bring me down. I’ve been trying to learn more and look for positive uplifting things.
Last night I watched “I Am Not Your Negro,” a documentary about race. It was excellent.

…This restored some of my faith people:

…"Blessed are those who can give without remembering and take without forgetting."- Elizabeth Asquith Bibesco

…One of my best friends shared this powerful video with me:

…One of my other best friends shared this, which is very illuminating:

…Black Lives Matter. Even Jesus knew it:
   Jesus in Luke 15:
-100 sheep, but one goes missing.
-Jesus leaves the 99 sheep, and goes after the one.
-The 99 say: “But what about us? Don’t we matter?”
-Of course the 99 still matter, but they’re not the ones in danger.
This one is.

And, lastly, I love the hopefulness in this:

-What if 2020 isn’t cancelled?
What if 2020 is the year we’ve been waiting for?
A year so uncomfortable, so painful, so scary, so raw
that it finally forces us to grow?
A year that screams so loud, finally awakening us
  from our ignorant slumber.
A year we finally accept the need for change.
Declare change. Work for change. Be the change.
A year we finally band together instead of
pulling each other further apart.
What if 2020 isn’t cancelled, but it’s
the most important year of them all?

…There is no way to camouflage this.
May 30th, 2020, Monday, and Monday night, were simply horrific.
As was June 1st, 2020.
I watched city after city shatter and smolder.
I watched my beloved Seattle do the same at the hands of (…)
I watched the flagship Nordstrom store, a building I worked in for years and years, get hedonistically ravaged. Windows broken. Every glass fixture shattered. Leather chairs ripped. Wooden chairs busted. Almost all young white males doing the damage, stealing clothes and jewelry and shoes and anything they could grab.
And when they were, at last, done with the destruction, just for good measure, they broke the sprinkler heads in the ceiling and unleashed a torrent on any salvageable items that remained.
For the fun of it, many of them filmed the footage so we could all see it, and so they could re-watch it themselves afterward, perhaps with a bowl of popcorn and a cold beer.
And that was just one building.
In just one city.
It was heartbreaking to witness. More than heartbreaking. It was traumatic. Sickening. It was a swirl of every horrible emotion you don’t want to feel coming at you at once.
For me, it was as if I was nine again, living an entire year of terror, time-lapsed, compressed into a matter of hours. Like being strapped to a chair in front of a TV and having to watch a snuff film on repeat over and over and over…
It reminded me of the shock I felt reading” The Lord of the Flies” at age nine, and learning how innocent boys, left to their own gruesome devices, can come to adore terror, terror inflicted on someone helpless or inferior, epitomizing the depravity of man’s inhumanity to man.
Hundreds of small businesses, without the muscle of a corporation like Nordstrom, were also savagely looted. (“looted” seems too kind a word.) Many small businesses were basically surviving paycheck to paycheck. Then came the pandemic. Then this.

Equally horrifying was watching the video of a white police officer essentially killing George Floyd while three other cops stood by doing nothing, though at one point, they even joined Derek Chauvin in leveling their entire body weight on a defenseless Floyd.

Black Americans are killed by police at a rate 2 and half times higher than white people. It’s a fact. And it needs to stop.

Nothing can bring back the people whose names are written above this text. They were killed needlessly by others charged to protect them. But let’s not add another name to the list. And let’s not dishonor their memories. Violence only exists to sabotage a message of social justice.

Now more than ever, we need to love, and talk, and listen.  Violence and vandalism are symptomatic of inhumanity, weakness, and depravity.

We need to love.

We need to talk.

We need to listen.

Please.

—I BROKE DOWN LAST WEEK AND COULDN’T PICK MYSELF BACK UP

gaslight days

today’s
another
gaslight
everything
wonky
flashlight
pupils
popping
like hot
grease
or a liquid
migraine
on the surface
of the lake
or else it’s
the fireplace
talking shit
spreading panic
like it’s
cheap
sunshine
and I know
I know that
fireplaces
can’t speak
but
it takes
sleight of hand
to make sense
of these
pyrite moments
neighbors toting
guns
by the storefronts
cities shrieking
nearly
every place
a combustible
tinderbox
infused with
gasoline and
an eternal
flame
so I tell
the fireplace
to shut
the fuck up
I tell the lake to
recuse itself
and man up
I tell myself
don’t be an idiot
breathe
relax
look for beauty
even if it’s
not there
