The dead rabbits show up unannounced to declare they’re famished. I’ve never seen dead rabbits both this animated and emaciated at the same time. The problem is the power outage lasted so long that it left everything in the fridge putrid and pungent, but there’s beer in a cooler. Yeah Yeah Yeah, the deceased hares say, shoulders hunched like greedy gangsters. The dead rabbits take turns swigging from a shared bottle, their choppers chinking on the glass. In seconds they’re a loopy kaleidoscope, acting like they own the place, plopping down on the loveseat and comforter. One of them burps up fish oil and turpentine. Another farts kerosene. After the last of them passes out, I slip out the front door with the grocery list you gave me the day before you left.
